First CDC report of what became AIDS

On 5 June 1981 the US CDC's MMWR reported five cases of Pneumocystis pneumonia in previously healthy gay men in Los Angeles — the first official report of what would be named AIDS. The epidemic went on to devastate LGBTQ+ communities and galvanized a generation of activism.
