In the early morning hours of June 28, 1969, a police raid on the Stonewall Inn on Christopher Street sparked spontaneous resistance from patrons and neighbors. The days-long protests are regarded as the turning point that ignited the modern LGBTQ+ movement. On the first anniversary in 1970, the first Pride marches (Christopher Street Liberation Day) took place — Christopher Street Day and Pride events worldwide commemorate it to this day.
