Scientific-Humanitarian Committee founded (Magnus Hirschfeld)
1897-05-01 — Germany
In May 1897 Magnus Hirschfeld and others founded the Scientific-Humanitarian Committee (Wissenschaftlich-humanitäres Komitee) in Berlin-Charlottenburg — the world's first organization campaigning for the rights of homosexual people. Its central goal was the repeal of Paragraph 175. (Sources give 14 or 15 May 1897; the exact day is uncertain, hence month precision.)
